In August 2002, a monument was erected in Dili, East Timor, on the street where Sander was shot. There are still memorial services being held there every year by local inhabitants.

World Press Freedom Day, organised by local journalist Gil da Silva, who wrote: "Here in Timor, we commemmorated the event by honoring Sander Robert Thoenes who lost his life in our country in search of the truth. About 200 journalists visited his monument with flowers and candles today in Becora, Dili." - 3 May 2011
